Dog Sitter Vs Dog Boarding

Best Dog Sitter Alternative Milngavie, Bearsden, Glasgow, Stirling

There are pros and cons to both options when it comes to choosing between a dog sitter and dog boarding. Ideally you need to pick the option that is best for your dog’s requirements.

It’s a no brainer that for a lot of dogs an experienced dog sitter will be the best option as this involves the least amount of change for your dog to adapt to.

However, for some dogs an experienced, dog boarding facility is the best option as there are some built in advantages.

Dog Sitter - Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The only change your dog will have to adjust to is being looked after by a different person which reduces the potential causes for stress.
  • Your dog gets the benefit of all its own home comforts and doesn’t have to contend with other dogs.
  • Your dog will have one on one attention and continue with their normal routine.
  • Up to date vaccinations are not compulsory.
  • Least risky option for old dogs that have never been kenneled before, dogs with a compromised immune system or dogs with separation anxiety.

Cons

  • You have to be comfortable leaving someone in your house in your absence.
  • If your dog takes a dislike to the dog sitter, they may become stressed or become territorial resulting in nervous aggression.
  • If your dog has a strict diet for health reasons, they may still be able to access food in your home unless you find someone vigilant.
  • If you go away a lot at short notice for long periods you may struggle to get the same person.

Dog Boarding - Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A good boarding facility will have high fences and double gate safety features built in so even if your dog panics or is very boisterous it’s a purpose built set up.
  • If your dog needs vigilance when it comes to their diet, then this is much easier in a dog kennel as they have no access to human food.
  • If you go away a lot at short notice you are more likely to get availability at a dog kennel as they can cater to more dogs.
  • Some rescue dogs, especially nervous aggressive or territorial ones, will be happier at a dog kennels because it’s a familiar environment to them.
  • If your dog takes a dislike to someone at the boarding kennels, there is often someone else there that they will like.

Cons

  • Your dog will have to adapt to many changes at once which can be overwhelming for some dogs leading to kennel stress.
  • There is an increased chance of contagious illness no matter how vigilant the boarding kennels are such as kennel cough or stomach bugs (Similar to day care for children).
  • You will have to keep all your dogs vaccinations up to date.
  • Not suitable for dogs with contagious diseases.
